Proofread

Give your manuscript a final polish

Why does my novel need a proofread?

Where a development edit handles the big issues of a novel, and the copy- and line edit focusses on the nuts and bolts, the proofreading stage is all about providing the icing on the cake.

No matter how thorough the previous stages of editing have been, it is likely that some errors will have slipped through the net.

These errors may be relatively minor but they still have the potential to distract readers from the world you’ve spent so long crafting in your novel – and give a bad impression to agents and publishers.

My proofreading service will provide a rigorous final check to ensure your manuscript looks its best before you share it with a wider audience.

I will identify and correct errors to ensure the text has a smooth and consistent look that will help to engage readers.

Issues that I will address include:

  • Spelling

  • Punctuation

  • Grammar

  • Typos

  • Semantics

  • Numerical sequencing of pages and chapters

  • Layout (including spacing)

  • Capitalisation

  • Hyphenation

What will I receive?

Format

I will provide you with an edited version of your novel, using Track Changes to show all the amends I have made and comment boxes to raise additional queries.

In addition I will supply you with an editorial report to provide an overview of the work I have done and a style sheet to confirm the editorial choices that have been employed.

The development edit will be carried out in Microsoft Word. Please supply all the novel in one document.

How much does a proofread cost?

All of my prices are based on the rates suggested by the Chartered Institute for Editors and Proofreaders.

As the time taken to complete the project will depend on the amount of work involved, please send me 1,000 words from the middle of your novel to enable me to provide a quote.
